Tool Box Talk (TBT) -An introduction

What is TBT (Tool Box Talk)?

A 'toolbox talk' is a short presentation to the workforce on a single aspect of health and safety. We prepare toolbox talks to save you the time and effort of writing them yourself. They may be in PowerPoint, portable document format (pdf) or as video. ( The basic format details are provided in this article further)

Why is it called a toolbox talk?

Employee consultation within the workplace is important because of technicalities. To simplify the technicalities, a toolbox talk aids in communication.

A toolbox meeting, also known as toolbox talk, is a short and routine consultation designed to create awareness of safety measures and hazards at the workplace

What should be covered in a toolbox talk?

Anything related to health and safety that is important to your company and will help your employees recognize potential hazards in the workplace.

A crew might have toolbox talks on caught-in hazards, fire safety, cold weather safety or how to use power tools correctly.

  • Focus on one topic relevant to the work being done that day.
  • Get workers involved by asking questions or having them demonstrate safe work practices.
  • Be sure to cover changes to the site or working conditions.
  • Have employees inspect tools, equipment, and PPE.

To enable effective consultation and communication, many organizations use 'Toolbox Talks'.

A Toolbox Talk is an informal (nowa days it has become the Formal procedures in many organizations) health and safety meeting that focuses on topics related to the workplace or job, such as hazards, safe work practices and how the organisation is minimising risks.

Question-Should we maintain the record of Tool Box Talk?

Answer: Yes, it ensures the attendance of the workers, and to monitor that procedure, it is being followed by the middle or lower management .

General Question : Should i get the signatures of all the workers who attended the Tool Box Talk?

Answer : Ensure that workers sign the TBT register .

General Question: If, after TBT, the workers do not sign and finally go to their workplace and become engaged in the work, then how do you get their signature ?

Answer : Try some suggestion

  1. Keep the TBT register at the entry gate (security gate ), so all workers will sign while they are entering or leaving the site/workplace.

2. Use a mobile app so workers can mark their attendance.

3. Leave the TBT register with the contractor or supervisor, so workers will enter their signature.

4. Take the photograph (i.e., a CCTV camera recording ) during TBT and upload it to your system to ensure the presence of all workers.
