H&S Signs -An introduction

PROHIBITION – red circular, with black pictorials, with white background and diagonals.


WARNINGS – black line triangle borders, with yellow background and black pictorials.


MANDATORY – circular, with blue background and white pictorials.


SAFE CONDITION – square, with green background with white pictorials.


FIRE-FIGHTINGS – square, with red backgrounds and white pictorials.


Hand Signals:

  • Hand signals can be used to direct hazardous operations such as crane or vehicle manoeuvres.
  • Ensure that the signals are precise, simple and easy to make and to understand.


Acoustic Signals: “acoustic signal” means a coded sound signal which is released and transmitted by a device designed for that purpose, without the use of a human or artificial voice.

  • E.g.
  • fire alarms ,
  • Emergency Alarms.

Illuminated Signs:

“illuminated sign” means a sign produced by a device made of transparent or translucent materials which are illuminated from the inside or the rear in such a way as to give the appearance of a luminous surface.

  • E.g.  Flash light
