H&S management review
- Management review is the routine evaluation of whether OHSMS are performing as intended and producing the desired results as efficiently as possible.
- It is the ongoing “due diligence” review by management that fills the gap between day-to-day work activities and periodic formal audits.
- Top management shall review the organization’s OH&SMS, at planned intervals, to ensure its continuing suitability, adequacy and effectiveness.
- The management reviews should be carried out on a regular basis (e.g. Monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or annually).
- Management review is a systematic assessment to ‘measure the effectiveness of the organisations’ management system.
- ISO standards require management reviews because they ensure that management systems remain focused on the direction of the business and continual improvement
What does the ISO 45001 standard require for management review?
The main review that is required of top management in the ISO 45001 standard is for top management to assess any opportunities for improvement and any needed changes in the external and internal issues affecting the OH&S management system. This includes how well you have met the OH&S policy and OH&S objectives. The standard also asks that top management review certain inputs from the OH&S management system listed below:

Recommendations for improvement
If someone has recommended a way that they think you can improve your OH&S performance, you owe it to yourself to see if it is feasible. These opportunities for continual improvement could even save you time and money.

(Refer clause 10.3, ISO 45001)
The organization shall continually improve the suitability, adequacy, and effectiveness of the OH&SMS, by enhancing OH&S performance.

Review evaluates performance against standards:
- Action taken as a result to improve.
Board/senior managers:
- Set targets as a result of review > i.e. amend policy, provision of resources, training provision etc.
- Middle managers:
- Review performance >Set targets for their area.
Junior managers:
- Review local performance> Set targets for their area.
it further explains:
Examples of continual improvement issues include:

- good practices, both internal and external to the organization;
- suggestions and recommendations from interested parties;
- new knowledge and understanding of occupational H&S-related issues;
- new or improved materials;
